Overview: This course introduces Australia's anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/CTF) regime to staff in businesses now subject to AML/CTF obligations. It explains what money laundering, terrorism financing and proliferation financing are, and why criminals target your profession. You'll learn which of your organisation's services are captured by the regime, your personal obligations when dealing with clients, how to conduct customer due diligence, how to recognise and report suspicious activity, and why tipping off is a criminal offence. This topic focuses on what you need to know and do in your day-to-day role - not on program design and compliance oversight responsibilities that sit with your principal or compliance officer.
Why is this course important? Organisations are subject to AML/CTF obligations for the first time under the AML/CTF Amendment Act 2024. From 1 July 2026, staff who are involved in providing designated services have direct personal obligations under the law - including conducting customer due diligence, escalating suspicious activity through internal channels, and maintaining the confidentiality of any suspicious matter reports. AML/CTF compliance is not just a management responsibility. Employees are the first line of defence. The day-to-day interactions you have with clients are where compliance happens in practice, and understanding your role is essential to protecting both your clients and your organisation.
Suitable for: For employees in Tranche 2 businesses providing designated services who do not design or oversee the AML/CTF compliance framework - relevant for lawyers, conveyancers, accountants, real estate agents and professionals in newly registered reporting entities under the AML/CTF Act. Based on Australian law.
This course is general and does not cover specific obligations for your organisation or role. Familiarise yourself with your organisation's AML/CTF policies and speak to your compliance officer if in doubt.
Principals, business owners, or compliance officers responsible for an AML/CTF program should see Anti-money laundering (AU) - New reporting entities - Advanced for full obligations: enrolment, program design, and governance.
