Duration: 23 minutes
Overview: This refresher course covers privacy in the Australian workplace under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). You'll learn what counts as personal information and sensitive information, how the Australian Privacy Principles protect individuals, and what's actually true (and what's a myth) about privacy at work. You'll also learn your additional responsibilities as a manager, including collecting personal information responsibly, handling access and correction requests, and using and disclosing information appropriately, including direct marketing rules and overseas disclosure obligations.
Why is this course important? More personal information is collected now than ever before, and privacy breaches carry increasing legal and financial risk, including a right for individuals to sue for serious breaches, criminal penalties for doxxing, and civil penalties of up to $50 million for organisations. As a manager, you're often responsible for the day-to-day decisions that create this risk, from responding to an access request to deciding whether information can be used for a new purpose. Getting these decisions right protects both individuals and your organisation.
Suitable for: All managers and supervisors in Australian organisations who need an efficient introduction to their privacy obligations, whether completing this training for the first time or refreshing existing knowledge.
Employees who aren't in a management role should instead complete Privacy in the workplace for employees - Refresher (AU).
