Overview: This is an 'Essentials' style course reviewing physical workplace hazards under Australia's model work health and safety (WHS) laws. The model laws apply in all Australian jurisdictions except Victoria, which has its own Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (Vic).
You'll review the duty of care that applies to your organisation and to you personally, the risk management process used to manage any hazard, and how to identify and control common physical hazards including manual tasks, hazardous chemicals, slips and trips, electricity, plant and equipment, and working at heights. You'll also learn your additional duties as a manager, including officer due diligence and supporting workers to manage risk safely.
Why is this course important? Physical hazards remain one of the leading causes of workplace injury and illness in Australia, and both organisations and individual officers can be held liable for failing to manage them appropriately. As a manager, you're often the first point of contact when a worker identifies a hazard or is unsure how to complete a task safely, and you play a direct role in making sure the right procedures and controls are actually followed.
Suitable for: All managers and supervisors in Australian organisations covered by the model WHS laws who need an efficient refresher on physical WHS hazards.
Jurisdictions that have adopted the model laws can still vary them, so always check the WHS laws and codes of practice that apply in your own state or territory.
This Essentials course assumes learners have already completed previous training on this subject (and is designed as a periodic refresher).
Note: Employees who are not in a management role should complete WHS: physical hazards for employees - Essentials (Model AU).
